Jill Scott, the daughter of Joyce Scott in Philadelphia Pennsylvania was born April 4th April 1972. She was also raised by her grandmother and grew up as a single child. Scott went to an institution called the Philadelphia High School for Girls as well as Temple University after graduating. Scott completed her secondary school education while also working at two different jobs. She hoped to be an English teacher at high school. This dream however, ended up being a short-lived dream when she quit the college after a year of study and became a teachers' aide. She started her career as a spoken-word artist who performed her own works in live poetry readings. She ultimately joined with Amir Quest love Thompson of The Roots. You Got Me was co-written by the two. Her first public appearance was in the midst of a Roots Show. After that, she began collaboration with other musicians such as Eric Benet Will Smith or Common. She was also able to experience the arts of performing during the Broadway tour across Canada's musical Rent. She was the very first artist to sign to Hidden Beach Recordings.
